Irregular Migration: How Educated Africans Die As Illiterates

Issues bordering on the increasing rate of Nigerians who die in European countries as a result of illegal migration formed the main thrust of the Pan African Institute for Global Affairs and Strategy (PAIGAS) lecture held last week at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Obubra, Cross River state.

PAIGAS Ambassador and resource person, Abdullahi Yuguda who spoke on behalf of the Institute gave a statistical analysis of the number of deaths both by sea and land, lamenting on the ignorance of the youths who embark on such movements.

He defined migration as the movement of people from one place to another with the intention of settling permanently or temporarily in a new location, mentioning that migration could be legal or illegal.

He said, “Migration is considered legal if those involve follow due process and respects the laws of both destinations whereas it becomes illegal when a person or group of persons illegally gains entry into a country, thereby violating the immigration laws of the destination country.”

Yuguda disclosed that unemployment, poverty, unfavorable economic policies, unfavorable working condition, economic and political marginalization of youth as the possible causes of illegal migration.

He further warned Corps Members to be mindful of scammers, especially on the social media as many victims have died on the long run. He advised them to patient in all they do with commitment and hardwork.
