A Corps Member serving in Calabar, the capital city of Cross River state Miss Harriet Ijeoma recently led her Colleagues to canvass for reduction in high cost of sanitary pad to help boost hygiene among young girls in Calabar.
Speaking at the event, convener of the campaign, Corps Member Harriet Ijeoma expressed gratitude to the different associations and the NYSC scheme for contributing towards the success of the campaign. She brought to the lime light the need for the reduction of the cost of sanitary pad which will help the personal hygiene of the girl child and also make pads available.
Ijeoma added that
the movement should not only be ‘every girl’s movement’ but ‘every one’s movement.’ She said: “It is to every girl to stand up for themselves and also for those girls who are less privileged. Let everyone advocate for a reduction in the price of sanitary pads so that there can also be a reduction in infections, lack of hygiene, body odour and lots more.” She disclosed that the movement will not stop as it will be taken to the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria until absolute concern is been given to it.
In her remarks, Founder of Youth Empowerment Initiation, Imo State, Mrs Anulika Umezurike said the girl child has many needs that not only the country should look to but the high class citizens. She appreciated Ijeoma for using the little she has to make impact her host community.
Also, Barr. James Udok advised that there is need for a reduction in the cost of sanitary pad, adding that this will enhance the menstrual hygiene of ladies. He lauded Ijeoma’s courage to picking up such a task and promise to take this to the higher authority for consideration.
Meanwhile, President of Editorial and Publicity CDS group, Chidi Okoye also commended the effort of the convener of the campaign. He promised that the CDS group and other Corps Members will also join in carrying out similar outreaches.
