Cross river state governor acknowledges Corps Members’ Impact

Cross River State Governor Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade could not hold his joy today as he admitted that Corps Members serving in the state have made positive impacts towards the development of the state, adding that scheme is a major partner in the developmental efforts of the State government.

Ayade made the assertion while delivering his speech at the swearing in ceremony for the 2019 Batch “C” Stream II Corps Members currently undergoing training at the State’s NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Obubra. He maintained that the presence of Corps Members in almost every facet of life in the State is a proof that the NYSC scheme remains essential and relevant in the society.

He said, “Cross River State has enjoyed and encouraged a very healthy relationship with the NYSC for many years and ours is a Government with a passion for youth development as we believe in the potentials of our youths to make the needed essential change that our country is desperate for.”

Governor Ayade who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mrs. MaryJane Ebri said the state government has also committed itself to empowering the youths with responsibilities and resources to make them independent, self-reliant and productive members of society.

He added that the State Government will continue to collaborate with the NYSC in the State to ensure the expansion of Corps Members’ interest in skills acquisition, advising them to pay specific attention to all the skills that they will be exposed to within the three weeks of the Orientation training. He also implored them to be part of this year’s Calabar carnival celebration tagged “Humanity”.

The Governor further assured the Corps Members that their deployment to the Cross River which is the ‘People’s Paradise’ is fortunate as they would be serving under a digitally inclined and youth friendly environment. He added that their individual and collective contributions are assets that the state Government intends to harness.

He therefore charged them to review the contributions of their predecessors, stating that it is an appraisal they must carry out right from the period of the Orientation in order to maximally perform better than what their predecessors have done.

Earlier, NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Eddy Megwa disclosed that a total of 996 Corps Members, comprising 408 Males and 588 females were dully registered as directed by the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters.

He said Corps Members have been incorporated into the regimentation of camp life and have remained committed and devoted to all camp activities. He further charged the Corps Members to ensure that they make themselves available for the training lined up for them. He called on the Governor to urgently upgrade camp facilities, especially in the renovation of hostel accommodation and administrative blocks for the comfort of the entire camp community.

The Coordinator also pleaded with the State government to urgently respond to the critical challenges threatening the Orientation Camp especially erosion, hostel accommodation for both Camp Officials and Corps Members as well as the provision of a dedicated power transformer for the Camp.
